New Nightmare on Elm Street Movie being dreamt up at Paramount

July 14, 2026 by Matt Rodgers

One, Two Freddy’s coming for you… in the form of a brand new A Nightmare on Elm Street movie at Paramount. More specifically, Paramount Primal, the studio’s new genre label run by J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, the producers behind Barbarian.

According to THR Paramount made a deal for the rights to Wes Craven’s original A Nightmare on Elm Street screenplay, which was released in 1984 to critical and commercial success. Grossing $25.7 million, the film kickstarted one of horror’s most iconic franchises, spawning multiple sequels that have earned a total of $472 million at the global box-office.

The new Nightmare’s U.S. rights were acquired from the Craven Estate, including his widow Iva Labunka and son Jonathan Craven, both of whom will act as producers on the new film.

“We look forward to bringing the world of Wes Craven’s Nightmare on Elm Street to a new and completely engaged generation of fans,” said Labunka. “We know that Wes would have been thrilled to see how horror is taking its long overdue place in the cultural canon. We can’t wait for all of us to sit together in a dark theatre – around the campfire of today – as the next chapter of the Nightmare story unfolds.”

“We can’t remember a time before we were fans of Wes Craven,” added Lifshitz and Margules. “The fact that Iya and Jonathan have entrusted us with this opportunity to help usher a new story into this world is an honor beyond words. We look forward to working alongside them to bring a terrifying new nightmare to audiences everywhere, and to welcome Freddy home.”

The Nightmare on Elm Street films focus on Freddy Krueger, played by Robert Englund, a child killer burned alive by the parents of his victims who returns years later via the dreams of teenagers to enact his revenge. A reboot was attempted in 2010, with Jackie Earle Haley inheriting the razor blade glove from Englund, but despite earning a solid $117.7 million worldwide, the film was considered a failure and the series was put into a deep sleep….until now
