Movie Review – Yellow Eyes (2026)

August 20, 2026 by Robert W Monk

Yellow Eyes, 2026.

Directed by Jesse Korman.
Starring Nena Martins, Michael Kunicki, Jimmy Chung, Margo O’Connell, Brian Rooney, and Joette Waters.

SYNOPSIS:

A young couple inherits a house from an unknown relative also unaware that there is an ancient evil hidden away in the building. As one becomes possessed, the other must find an exorcist to set them free.

Yellow Eyes plays out like a classic, old-school possession story, but infuses the genre with a streak of dark, twisted humour. Enjoyable, witty, and at times down right creepy, the narrative succeeds by leaning into its central premise: ancient rites and forgotten traditions returning to bite the living.

The trouble begins when a cursed object, a prehistoric Mesopotamian idol, is discovered at the new home of an excited young couple, Brad and Julia. Having just inherited the property from an unknown uncle, they quickly discover their ancient artefact of a housemate expects them to work for their living space. As the blood begins to drip, Brad undergoes a terrifying transformation. Actor Michael Kunicki delivers a strong performance here, masterfully mixing demented energy with a weird humour as Brad takes a sharp turn for the worse.

Left to deal with the fallout is Julia, played by Nena Martins. Martins strikes a great balance, blending “WTF” shock with a world-weary toughness as she takes on the daunting task of finding an exorcist to fix the mess. This supernatural chaos completely upends her daily life; Julia is usually busy working as a hairdresser, managing demanding clients like Joette Waters’ character, a local lady desperate to get glammed up for her return to the dating scene. In a grimly ironic twist, she later pays a trip to the house for a far more surprising appointment.

Beyond the demonic goings-on the film also taps into the real-world horror of moving into a new residence. Because the house is a probate-prompting legacy from an unknown relative, the couple is forced to confront a whole new level of litigious property nightmare before the otherworldly stuff even gets going.

With all of this to look forward to, Yellow Eyes is an enjoyable watch for scare fans who appreciate a traditional possession tale with a fresh spin. The set-pieces are well worked out as well, with a good level of choregraphic sense to the final moments of the unfortunates. It works a bit like a zombie flick in the way that individuals are turned and possessed, bringing more friends and acquaintances into the ‘party’. This leads to the whole project having an unsettling and homely kind of atmosphere. Added to this are the makeup and visual effects that are highly impressive, with blood dripping vividly against the mostly darkened gloom of the house’s underbelly.
