Sophie Okonedo and David Oyelowo star in the trailer for Virginia Woolf adaptation Clarissa

October 2, 2026 by Matt Rodgers

Neon has released the first trailer for Clarissa, Arie Esiri and Chuko Esiri’s loose adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway.

Clarissa stars Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda) and India Amarteifio (Queen Charlotte) as the titular character at different stages of her life, in a story of a woman who organises a high-society party at her house, only for it to stir up long dormant memories from her past.

Adapted from the novel by Chuko Esiri, the film also stars David Oyelowo (Selma), Toheeb Jimoh (Ted Lasso), Nikki Amuka-Bird (Knock at the Cabin), and Ayo Edebiri (The Bear). Check out the trailer below…

Across a single day in Lagos, Nigeria, Clarissa (Sophie Okonedo) prepares to host a high society party at her home, as her complicated past begins to consume her, in the form of now-distant friends and loves from her youth. Simultaneously, Septimus (Fortune Nwafo[r]), a young soldier, is haunted by his own memories of the horrors he has witnessed and endured. As the perspectives traverse past and present, across the bourgeois class and those too easily forgotten by society, a delicate portrait of contemporary Nigeria emerges. Directors Arie and Chuko, adapting Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, take the renowned source material and deliver a unique and deeply felt story.

Clarissa is in select theaters from December 11th.
