The weekend box office was a battle between one movie focusing on an evil being attempting to convince people that they are human, and the Other Mommy. Ba dum tish.
Despite no advanced previews and terrible exit-polling (D+ CinemaScore), Rob Savage’s Other Mommy overperformed at the North American box office to the tune of $27.5 million. The Jessica Chastain-led horror movie about a demonic entity that takes on the form of a little girl’s mother also collected $17.69 million at the international box office. With a budget of just $18 million, the Universal and Blumhouse production already has a global tally of $45.19 million.
By comparison Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Network follow-up, The Social Reckoning, was friendless at the box office, tanking with just $5.5 million. It didn’t receive many more likes overseas either, earning just $3.5 million for a running total of $9 million. The Mikey Madison and Jeremy Strong headlined sequel arrives 16 years after David Fincher’s critically-acclaimed The Social Network, which opened with $22 million on its way to $96 million domestic and $224 million worldwide.
Elsewhere Digger continued to plumb new depths, despite growing support from the Letterboxd community and an immediate online reappraisal, the Tom Cruise satire dropped 60% in its sophomore frame with just $3.2 million. So far the $160 million budgeted film has earned $14 million at the domestic office, and has a running global cume of $35.3 million.
