62nd Chicago International Film Festival Review – Iron Boy

October 13, 2026 by Robert Kojder

Iron Boy, 2026.

Directed by Louis Clichy.
Featuring the voices of Gary Clichy, Rod Paradot, Dimitri Colas, Aurélie Vassort, Brune Moulin, Alexandre Astier, and Jean-Pascal Zadi.

SYNOPSIS:

Christophe, a 10-year-old boy with balance issues navigates life in an orthopedic brace while his struggling family farm faces modernization. Torn between independence and mending ties with his distant father, he weighs his future.

With young farm boy Christophe (voiced by Gary Clichy, son of co-writer/director Louis Clichy) required to wear an orthopedic brace to maintain a straight posture and avoid leaning crooked, Iron Boy is a tenderly told 1980s-set animated feature about growing up with a physical disability, being othered because of it, but ultimately finding passion and a place of belonging.

So much of it rings true that it isn’t much of a surprise to find out that there are some autobiographical elements, even though the film is also based on a story by Emmanuel Villin (co-written by Franck Salomé alongside the aforementioned director).

Naturally, Christophe isn’t happy about the mandated brace, as it is not only restrictive and ugly, but it also makes him a target for further ridicule and bullying at school, where he is already a loner. As such, his whole world feels tilted, paving the way for occasional inventive bursts of imagination, with moments of intense frustration making the whole room spin on its axis. It’s one of quite a few ideas that tell the story smartly in a way only animation can.

There are also some familiar, well-executed narrative elements, such as a stern father dismissive of his son’s artistic goals (Christophe begins playing an organ at a nearby church), friction with his siblings, some joy in discovering and befriending a girl who embraces what makes him unique, and some drama involving financial strain on the family farm.

Nevertheless, it is that brace and an animated feature that deals with a condition and character rarely explored on-screen, with such wondrous creativity and a wholehearted embrace of the medium, that make Iron Boy a painterly, touching experience. It’s a film as strong as iron with its emotions, humor, and visual language.
