A new Doctor Who audiobook is now available from Big Finish Productions, and it’s a sad one for the time-travelling history teacher Barbara Wright. Doctor Who – The Audio Novels: The Missing Hour by Simon Guerrier and Fio Tretheway is an epic six-hour-long story that takes the First Doctor and his companions back to 1940.

The Missing Hour takes the Doctor and his companions to Malta in June 1940. During this time, the island is under constant bombardment by Nazi forces, and Flight Officer Roddy Wright, Barbara’s father, is one of a handful of Hurricane pilots helping to defend the island. Barbara Wright knows full well what is going to happen to her father when he next goes on a sortie, as she had to grow up knowing his plane went missing while defending Malta. Barbara knows she can’t alter history (unlike other companions), but how can she resist spending more time with the father she lost at such a young age? After all, what could go wrong from doing that?

Doctor Who – The Audio Novels: The Missing Hour is narrated by veteran audiobook reader Barnaby Edwards, who is also an experienced director and a Dalek operator.
Producer David Richardson said: “I love a substantial slice of Season One Doctor Who and The Missing Hour is just that – a deep dive into history as the original TARDIS team take up residence in Malta during World War II. It’s a chance to explore the family history of the wonderful Barbara Wright, as her father Roddy comes to the fore.”
