Commando gets spooky with four haunting tales for Halloween

October 24, 2026 by Andrew Newton

The spooky atmosphere of Halloween runs through all of October, and even the brave soldiers of World War II can’t avoid the season’s horror. Four haunting Commando tales are on sale now from D.C. Thompson, featuring everything from haunted war machines to fighting terrifying cannibals behind enemy lines. The four spooky issues are:

6003 (Home of Heroes): H-FOR-HAUNTED

In this tale from Richard Estep, the Lancaster crews of the 281 Pathfinder Squadron already had flak, Luftwaffe night patrols and mechanical failures to contend with, but when one of their planes crashes, supernaturally strange things begin to happen on bombing missions. What is the root of these hauntings, and can Flight Lieutenant Tim Shaw and his crew overcome their fears to uncover what’s going on?

Richard Estep’s story is made even more eerie by the outstanding artwork of Manuel Benet.

6004 (Gold): Forest of Fear

In this classic story from 1964, there’s horror in store for Big Mitch Connor and his Canadian unit. When these lads arrive in Hong Kong, they find the British troops drilling, saluting and doing fatigues, despite the Japanese forces closing in fast. Mitch thought the British had yet to wake up and believed he was the one to teach them how to fight like men. And that was the first decision that led to all his troubles.

This tale, by Clegg, was originally printed in 1964 as issue 101, and features artwork by Bielsa, with cover art by Chaco.

6005 (For Action and Adventure): Hunger

The action in this chilling story takes us to Stalingrad in the winter of 1942. The battle for Stalingrad was a brutal, non-stop slog through the ruins of the city, but for Medic Josef Seubert, the war on the streets is about to take a more terrifying turn. Strange sounds have been coming from the shells of buildings, shadowy figures prowl the streets in the dark, and now even men are vanishing from their posts. Josef is about to find out that crazed men are living in the ruins, and they are now hunting whatever they can catch.

This spine-chilling story is by N A Breakenridge, with artwork by Paolo Ongaro and a suitably gruesome cover by Marco Bianchini.

6006 (Silver): The Haunted Tank

In this never-before-reprinted Commando comic from 1986 (originally printed as issue 2050), Sid Raleigh never believed in ghosts until he joined the crew of a Churchill tank that had the nickname “Firebrand”. But after some time spent with the crew, and a ghost that had a good sense of humour, he became a firm believer in them

This issue features art by Ibanez, and a brand-new cover by Neil Roberts.
