It’s been a week of ups and downs for the Warner Bros. and DC Comics blockbuster Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice; negative reviews have sent the film’s Rotten Tomatoes score down to around 29%, but out of that has come many box office records all across the world.
In the last week, the Zack Snyder-directed film has collected a staggering $560 million (estimated at close of play Thursday) with $209 million coming from its domestic US total which included a $166 million opening weekend. It also now holds the record for the largest non-summer opening in the US of all-time, the biggest March domestic release of all-time, and the largest worldwide opening ever for a superhero/comic-book property.
Many of last week’s totals are front-loaded of course as the majority of fans pre-booked for the opening day and so a second weekend drop was always expected, especially with the added pressure of the those pesky reviews and word-of-mouth now spread throughout the globe. And as such, the film has dropped a huge 81% from its opening day (although that total included Thursday previews), grossing around $15.3 million, bringing its domestic total to $224 million. The Friday-to-Friday drop itself is 71%.
Box Office Mojo are predicting a second weekend for the film anywhere between $50-70 million. Up against it, the only two big releases are God’s Not Dead 2 which grossed $2.95 million Friday; and comedy Meet the Blacks, which took $1.4 million.
