Zack Snyder wants Ben Affleck to do a standalone Batman film

April 4, 2016 by Justin Cook

In the days since the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it has become increasingly clear that Ben Affleck, who played Batman on-screen in the movie, would be the perfect person to helm a solo Batman movie for the DC Extended Universe. Recent reports have indicated that he has already penned a script for the project, but the truth is that Affleck hasn’t even signed on to return as Bruce Wayne yet, as he is only contractually obligated to star in Justice League Part One and Two and nothing more. In a recent JOE.ie interview, however, Dawn of Justice and Justice League director Zack Snyder revealed that he very badly wants Affleck to take on a Batman solo film.

When asked about convincing Affleck to do the solo film, Snyder told the outlet, “I keep working on him, he’s always said he’s a one movie at a time guy. He’s finishing editing his film, Live By Night and then he comes to Justice League and then after that, I think he’s going to try and develop the story. Then we’ll see if he likes it.”

On Affleck directing the film, he said, “Oh yeah, for sure. I think he would. I think that’s kind of the prerequisite, hopefully, for him doing [the film].”

At this point, it seems like it’s only a matter of time before Affleck is officially announced to be returning for, and most likely directing/writing the DC Extended Universe’s first standalone Batman film. The last live-action Batman solo film was Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, which was released in 2012.

One would assume that when DC hired Affleck as the Caped Crusader, they did so hoping that he would, somewhere down the line, want to get involved behind the camera as well. The actor signed on for the job in August 2013, back when he was coming off of his Oscar win for Argo, and, having helmed two other very well received films, was one of the most sought after directors in Hollywood. Chances are, as Snyder mentions above, an official announcement about a Batman solo film will be made when Affleck finishes up work on his newest film, Live By Night.
