Leonardo DiCaprio is teaming with Roy Lee (Sherlock Holmes) to produce a biopic of Calvin and Hobbes creator Bill Watterson for Warner Bros. For those who don’t know, Calvin and Hobbes is a comic strip focussing on a boy genius, his pet tiger and their adventures, and ran between 1985 and 1995, as well as selling over 45 million books.
According to Screen Crush, the movie is being based on Dan Dollar’s spec script A Boy and His Tiger and will focus on the creation of the comic strip and how the cartoonist dealt with its unexpected success. Earlier this year, the documentary Dear Mr. Watterson was released, although Watterson himself didn’t appear in the film, and it’s unclear whether he will be involved in this latest project, or even allow the rights to Calvin and Hobbes to be used. In the past, he has denied all permission to merchandise the characters, so one has to wonder how this project will turn out.
