Simon Kinberg to expand Fox’s Marvel Universe with three-year deal

December 6, 2013 by admin

Yesterday, Bryan Singer announced that 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise would see another release in 2016 with X-Men: Apocalypse, and now it’s been announced via The Hollywood Reporter that writer-producer Simon Kinberg has signed a three-year deal with a view to expanding the studio’s Marvel properties “into full-blown universes, with the hope of creating for Fox something akin to the Marvel model of interlocking movies.”

“I have a lot of ideas on how to built those brands and do what everybody is thinking of these days: Be like Marvel,” says Kinberg, whose credits include X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: First Class, as well as the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Fantastic Four. “I want to be able to build stories over multiple movies.”

Now, quite where this leave’s Fox’s ‘Marvel Consultant’ Mark Millar is anyone’s guess…

As well as developing Fox’s Marvel slate, Kinberg also has an adaptation of the graphic novel Rust in development at the studio, with director Carlos Saldana (Rio) attached, as well as an adaptation of Andy Weir’s e-book The Martian, which has Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods) set to write and direct. Looking beyond Fox, he’s also producing Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella, Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie, an as-yet-unrevealed Star Wars spin-off, and the animated series Star Wars Rebels.
