Maisie Williams addresses New Mutants casting rumour

April 20, 2016 by Justin Cook

Originally published April 20, 2016. Updated April 15, 2018.

Late last month, a rumour claimed that Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams would be joining the cast of the Josh Boone-directed X-Men spin-off New Mutants as Wolfsbane, a mutant capable of shapeshifting from a human into a wolf. Although 20th Century Fox almost immediately denied the casting, many were still left wondering if the studio was telling the truth or trying to hide it. In a recent interview, while remaining relatively silent on her potential involvement with the film, Willams spoke up about the reports.

The actress was promoting the much-awaited sixth season of Game of Thrones, due out in less than a week on April 24th, when Entertainment Weekly asked about New Mutants. She replied, “I can’t say much about it at all, but I would absolutely love to be a part of it, [and] to be a part of the Marvel family. New Mutants looks absolutely incredible and I’ve always loved the idea of spin-offs and [director] Josh Boone is incredibly talented. So, yeah, sign me up.”

The statement confirms that Williams is at the very least aware and excited about the project and possibly even in talks with the studio. Regardless, she offers up far too little information to officially say whether she’s in the movie or not. The initial report also mentioned that Anya Taylor-Joy (Magik), Alexandra Shipp (Storm) and James McAvoy (Professor X) would be on board for the film.
