Marvel announces Thor: Ragnarok cast, including new additions Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson, Jeff Goldblum and Karl Urban

May 20, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Marvel Studios has officially announced the cast for Thor: Ragnarok, with Cate Blanchett (Carol), Jeff Goldblum (Independence Day: Resurgence), Tessa Thompson (Creed) and Karl Urban (Star Trek Beyond) all set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the God of Thunder’s third solo outing.

As previously rumoured, Blanchett is set to take on the role of “mysterious and powerful new villain” Hela, while Thompson will portray the superhero Valkyrie. Goldblum has been cast as The Grandmaster, who in the comic books is one of the Elders of the Universe, and Urban will play Skurge, a.k.a. The Executioner.

The four new additions join Marvel veterans Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Idris Elba (Heimdall) and Anthony Hopkins (Odin), with Mark Ruffalo also returning as The Hulk. Kevin Feige had previously revealed that Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster would not be returning, and it looks like there may be no room for Lady Sif or the Warriors Three either.

Check out some concept art released as part of the official announcement…

“The continuation of the epic Thor franchise will be powerful and unique, and with the additions of Cate, Jeff, Tessa, Karl, and Mark to the cast we have the makings of his most dangerous and heroic adventure yet,” said Kevin Feige. “The sheer, raw talent each of these actors brings to the screen can’t be quantified. Having any one of them join the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be an honor, and having all of them is incredible.”

Thor: Ragnarok is being directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) and is set for release on November 3rd 2017.
