The Top 100 Your Sinclair ZX Spectrum Games: #93 – Gyron

May 27, 2016 by Villordsutch

Villordsutch counts down Your Sinclair’s Top 100 ZX Spectrum Games…

After yesterday’s excellent serving of RoboCop you’d probably be expected something equally as delicious. Well back in 1985 Gyron could have won you a Porsche 923 or £12,500 (GBP) of cash if you managed to successfully solve its puzzle.  However, that prize doesn’t mean anything if the game really isn’t any good!

Published by Firebird Software, the computer software arm of British Telecom (BT), this insanely large 3D maze offered such mind bending delights that included the cycle of the game only repeating once every so many thousands of years (10 to 100 depending on what source you read), roaming guardians, instant death dealing watchtowers and mind-twisting puzzles; this sounded like an amazing game.  However, to play it you soon realised that it’s actually a bit of a nightmare! The maze map blinks in and out, the laser-tower guardians are there or not and with no discernible markings in the maze you rapidly find this game a bit dull as you wander around hoping not to die.

Reading World of Spectrum it appears only 60 people ever completed the first two parts of this game to warrant a claim to the Porsche or the cash, due to this another event was generated for these winners around the world called Gyron Arena and a winner was found within 18 minutes.
