James Gunn poses with Mjolnir, prompts speculation that Thor could appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

June 3, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has taken to Facebook to share an image of himself posing with Mjolnir, which has naturally sparked speculation that Chris Hemsworth’s Thor could make an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.

It’s certainly possible that Thor could cameo in the Guardians sequel, perhaps in a post-credit sequence building to Thor: Ragnarok. The two franchises have briefly interacted already, with the post-credit scene for Thor: The Dark World featuring an appearance from Benicio Del Toro’s Collector, and Ragnarok is set for release just six months after the arrival of Guardians Vol. 2.

Before we all get too excited about the possibility of seeing the God of Thunder alongside the Guardians (before Avengers: Infinity War, at least), Gunn has played down the speculation, stating in the comments section of the photo that, “I’m holding it simply because the props guy had it on set. I have no reason why.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set for release on May 5th 2017, followed by Thor: Ragnarok on November 3rd 2017.
