Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows opens to $69 million

June 6, 2016 by admin

It’s Turtle Power once again as the Heroes in a Half-Shell have topped the US box office, but it’s not pizzas all round.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows [read our reviews here, here and here] opened against romance flick Me Before You and comedy Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping to earn an estimated $35 million, knocking X-Men: Apocalypse from the top spot. The bad news however is that this is a 46% drop-off from 2014’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which opened to $65.5 million. Worse still, the sequel’s budget had been increased by $10 million, so this is not the news Paramount would have hoped for. In terms of domestic totals, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is looking to make $90-$100 million, a huge drop off from its predecessor.

Worldwide, the movie opened in 40 markets and earned around $34 million with the UK delivering the highest revenue. That brings the Turtles total to $69 million.

Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo, and Raphael return to cinemas this summer to battle bigger, badder villains, alongside April O’Neil (Megan Fox), Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett), and a newcomer: the hockey-masked vigilante Casey Jones (Stephen Amell). After supervillain Shredder escapes custody, he joins forces with mad scientist Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry) and two dimwitted henchmen, Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and Rocksteady (WWE Superstar Stephen “Sheamus” Farrelly), to unleash a diabolical plan to take over the world. As the Turtles prepare to take on Shredder and his new crew, they find themselves facing an even greater evil with similar intentions: the notorious Krang.
