Stan Lee praises Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, talks Marvel cameos and his favourite movie role

June 21, 2016 by Gary Collinson

With production now underway on Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel legend Stan Lee has offered his seal of approval to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man following his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut earlier this year in Captain America: Civil War.

“Oh, he’s wonderful!” said Lee during an appearance at Denver Comic-Con (via ComicBookResources). “I was with him the other day. He is great! I can’t believe it. It’s as if we created a living being to be Spider-Man, and it turned out to be him.”

Having been with Holland recently, Lee seemingly confirmed his customary cameo for Spider-Man: Homecoming, going on to state that: “Unfortunately, this will frustrate you a little, I have a favorite but I can’t tell you what it is, because it hasn’t appeared yet. I did it — I had to go to… where did I go? Somewhere on the East Coast in Georgia. Atlanta! I don’t know, somewhere. But I had to go there and do three cameos for three movies at the same time. One of the cameos I did is for the –”

After being interrupted by a member of staff, Lee added: “I can’t even mention the movie?! Well, let me put it this way, it’s a movie that will come out soon. You’re gonna all want to see it because it’s one of your favorites, and — in that movie — I have a cameo where I’m dressed up as… I won’t tell them! But you are gonna love it!”

Presumably the three movies would be Spider-Man: Homecoming, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok, with Lee likely to have shot his cameos back-to-back (that may explain why James Gunn was with Chris Pratt and Tom Holland recently). But that’s speculation on our part.

Meanwhile, Lee was also asked during the panel what his favourite movie is that he’s appeared in, and surprisingly, it wasn’t a Marvel film:

“Gee, that’s a hard one. I got a big kick out of Mallrats,” said Lee (via ComicBook). “But it wasn’t a cameo; I really had a role in the movie. Funny thing about that: in the movie, I’m talking to the boy who was the lead, who was very unhappy becuase he was having trouble with his girlfriend, and I mentioned to him, ‘I remember I once had a girlfriend and I lost her but I’ve never forgotten her, and I think about her all the time,’ something like that. Now, I went home, and my wife said to me, ‘Now what is this about that girlfriend?’ And I learned you have to be very careful about how you explain movies to your wife.”
