Sony to build “a whole Spider-Man universe” with Marvel

June 24, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Prior to the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony announced that it was developing a further two sequels to the Marc Webb reboot, along with spinoff movies for The Sinister Six and Venom.

Of course, the negative reaction to the 2014 sequel put paid to those plans, leading Sony to form a partnership with Marvel Studios to relaunch the wall-crawler as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Captain America: Civil War.

With filming on next year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming now underway, The Hollywood Reporter spoke to Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Tom Rothman, asking him whether the studio still intends on launching a “whole Spider-Man universe” and has any plans to work with Marvel beyond the main Spider-Man series.

“Yes to both those questions,” said Rothman. “It’s been fantastic, our relationship with Marvel. Sony has the ultimate authority. But we have deferred the creative lead to Marvel, because they know what they’re doing.”

Rothman’s comments are interesting, given that Sony announced back in March that it had revived plans for its live-action Venom movie, albeit without Marvel’s involvement, which was said to be eyed as a potential standalone franchise from the main Spider-Man series.

Spider-Man: Homecoming sees Tom Holland and Marisa Tomei reprising their roles from Captain America: Civil War as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Aunt May. They’ll be joined by Marvel regular Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, alongside Michael Keaton (Birdman), Michael Barbieri (Little Men), Zendaya (K.C. Undercover), Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus), Martin Starr (Silicon Valley), Donald Glover (Community), Laura Harrier (One Life to Live), Kenneth Choi (Captain America: The First Avenger), Hannibal Buress (Broad City), Isabella Amara (The Boss), Jorge Lendeborg, Jr. (Graceland), JJ Totah (Glee), Abraham Attah (Beasts of No Nation), Michael Mando (Better Call Saul), Selenis Leyva (Orange Is the New Black) and Bokeem Woodbine (Riddick). It is set for release on July 7th, 2017.
