Exclusive: Dave Franco discusses The Room movie The Masterpiece

July 4, 2016 by Gary Collinson

During an interview with Flickering Myth’s Scott Davis to promote the release of Now You See Me 2, actor Dave Franco offered up some comments on The Masterpiece (formerly titled The Disaster Artist), James Franco’s upcoming retelling of the making of the cult classic The Room.

“We’re still shocked that anyone let us make this movie based on The Room,” states Franco. “I saw a cut of it recently and I’m very hard on myself, but it turned out good. It really did. It’s a tough tone to pull off, it’s comedic but it’s also very tragic, and you want to do the whole story justice, you want to do these characters justice. You don’t want to poke fun at them, you want to play it straight, and my brother who plays Tommy Wiseau could win many, many awards for this.”

Asked about the stellar cast which has been assembled for the movie, Franco replied, “One benefit of shooting in L.A. is that you can ask your friends if they can pop in for one scene and it’s not a big deal. So we had so many incredible cameos and it’s shocking just how many people you find out adore this movie The Room, which is known as the best worst movie ever made, and they jump at the opportunity to be involved in anything revolving around that movie.”

Check out the full interview below:

The Masterpiece stars James Franco as The Room writer-director and star Tommy Wiseau, with Dave Franco portraying actor Greg Sestero, who also penned the book on which the movie is based. Joining them in the cast are Seth Rogen, Josh Hutcherson, Ari Graynor, Jacki Weaver, Hannibal Buress, Kate Upton, Zac Efront, Alison Brie, Sharon Stone, Bryan Cranson, Andrew Santino, Shawn Kavanaugh, Nathan Fielder, Paul Sheer  and Judd Apatow, while Tommy Wiseau also cameos.
