Edgar Wright to direct Kolchak: The Night Stalker

May 28, 2014 by Gary Collinson

If Deadline is to be believed, it seems that Edgar Wright has wasted little time choosing his next project after vacating the director’s chair on Marvel’s Ant-Man, with the site reporting that he’s once again turned his attention to a feature reboot of the cult TV series Kolchak: The Night Stalker for Disney.

Airing between 1974 and 1975, Kolchak: The Night Stalker followed Carl Colchak (Darren McGavin), a Chicago reporter who investigated bizarre cases, usually involving monsters, aliens, and other supernatural phenomena.

Wright has been developing an adaptation of The Night Stalker for several years as a vehicle for Johnny Depp, with a script by D.V. DeVincentis (Grosse Point Blank) which Deadline says is in “strong shape”. However, it’s thought that Wright could face scheduling issues with Depp, who is currently shooting Black Mass and also has another Disney movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales on his slate, as well as a possible role in The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero.
