Meryl Streep teaming with J.J. Abrams for TV adaptation of The Nix

September 11, 2016 by Gary Collinson

According to Deadline, Hollywood heavyweights Meryl Streep and J.J. Abrams are teaming for a TV adaptation of Nathan Hill’s bestselling debut novel The Nix. The limited series is being produced by Bad Robot, with Abrams said to be in line to direct at least some of the episodes.

Described as a sprawling generational tale, The Nix “focuses on a hippie-era mother who gets national press exposure for throwing rocks at a conservative governor on the presidential campaign trail. Before you know it, her estranged son — a professor, aspiring novelist and general underachiever — seizes an opportunity to get himself out of debt by writing a scathing profile of his estranged mother.”

Meryl Streep is expected to be in the mix for what would be her 20th Oscar nomination for her latest film Florence Foster Jenkins, and is set to reunite with her Into the Woods director Rob Marshall for Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns. Abrams meanwhile is yet to announce his next directorial project following Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but he’s producing a host of projects including Star Wars: Episode VIII, M:I 6 – Mission Impossible, God Particle and Kolma, as well as serving as executive producer on the upcoming Westworld TV series.
