The Flickering Myth Reaction – Dumb and Dumber To trailer

June 12, 2014 by Luke Owen

The Flickering Myth writing and editorial team give their thoughts on the trailer for Dumb and Dumber To….

It may be 20 years after the original, but Harry and Lloyd are back for Dumb and Dumber To, the trailer for which was released yesterday.

But what did our writing team think?

Ozzy Armstrong: I might be one of the few people born in the mid 80’s who didn’t enjoy the first film so a sequel seems completely redundant to me. Besides not liking the first Dumb and Dumber, I’m not a massive a fan of Jim Carrey either – so that probably doesn’t help.

As far as the trailer itself goes, I’m assuming that all of the “funny bits” were on show. This only makes me think that the end result will most likely be a big steaming unfunny turd of a picture. In short, I really couldn’t care less.

Scott J Davis: Do you really need to ask? I like it a lot.

Chris Cooper: I love funny Jim Carrey, The Mask and Ace Ventura etc. I also love serious Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Truman Show. What I did not like was Dumb and Dumber and the same can be said for its sequel based on this trailer.

Anthony Donovan Stokes: The opening gag was so good I stopped watching so that other gags wouldn’t be ruined when I see the movie

Villordsutch: Wasn’t a fan the of the original and I found this rather embarrassing. Do both men need a new kitchen fitted and that’s why they’re doing this?

Tom Jolliffe: I thought it looked better than expected given the recent history of Carrey and the Farrelly brothers, and the fact it’s been 20 years since the first film. It does feel a bit forced and the chemistry from the first film doesn’t feel quite as natural. It’s still there, but not as strong as it once seemed. I think this will be an okay time passer, but probably lacking the memorable quotes and laughs of the first film. If Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues struggled to reclaim the magic of its predecessor after 10 years, this certainly will after 20. This is still very much on my to watch list though.

Kris Wall: I agree with Tom, while it was great to see them back together, it just looked and felt a little…… awkward. I remain cautiously optimistic and am hoping to be proven wrong as I love the original, but as Tom also said, Anchorman 2 was a huge disappointment for me, a series of seemingly never ending stale and forced ‘gags’,and that was a gap of 10 years. Fingers crossed !

Scott J Davis: So, just me looking forward to it then?

Anthony Donovan Stokes: And me

Gary Collinson: I loved Dumb & Dumber back in the day, but couldn’t see the point in this sequel after all this time. However, I have to admit I chuckled a couple of times during the trailer.

Anthony Donovan Stokes: I thought the opening gag justified a sequel – very, very clever way to address how long it’s been since the original

Luke Owen: Back on the Anticipated Films podcast (listen here), I had this down as one I couldn’t wait to see as I adore the original (still one of the funniest movies ever made). Having now seen the trailer, I wish I’d used the spot for something else. I laughed at the “dust” joke but everything else seemed forced. If this is their best foot forward, they did not inspire much hope.

Gav Logan: If it was any two other characters I probably wouldnt have laughed…but it was Harry and Lloyd so I loved it! Wont come close to the first one though.

Anghus Houvouras: Can someone have the Farrely Brothers pick me up a bucket of water while they’re heading back to the well?

Anthony Donovan Stokes: Seems like a return to form for them. It looks way funnier then Hall Pass and especially Movie 43.

Luke Owen: I suppose it can’t be as bad as The Three Stooges.

Can it?

Alice Rush: My main worry was this film (and I had the same for Anchorman 2) is that so much of the joy from the original is in it’s natural oddball humour; you can’t force jokes like that without it feeling artificial and fake. And after the trailer I’m worried that the film is going to be just that. I must admit I did feel a pang of nostalgia at seeing Carrey and Daniels together again but that little twinge of pleasure can’t carry a whole film.

Luke Owen: I suppose it can’t be as bad as Anchorman 2.

Can it?

Tom Jolliffe: I will stick my neck out though and say it’ll be ten times better than the dire Dumb & Dumber prequel they did about 10 years ago.

Luke Owen: Well this trailer did have 1 moment where I laughed. Which is 100% more laughs than I had when watching Dumb and Dumberer.

Not the most positive response to the movie, but it seems fans of the original Dumb & Dumber are still holding out hope. What did you think of the trailer for Dumb and Dumber To?
