Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp remaking Takashi Miike’s Shield of Straw

October 27, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp is partnering up with Chris and Paul Weitz’s Depth of Field and All Nippon Entertainment Works for an English-language remake of Takashi Miike’s thriller Shield of Straw, which is being scripted by Creighton Rotherberger and Katrin Benedikt (Olympus Has Fallen, London Has Fallen).

The original film is based upon Kazuhiro Kiuchi’s novel Wara no Tate, and was a big success in Japan, as well as a finalist for the Palme d’Or in Cannes back in 2013. It follows a team of police officers charged with protecting an accused killer who has a contract put out on them by the billionaire grandfather of their latest victim.

“We are thrilled at the prospect of bringing the remake of the Japanese thriller Shield of Straw to American audiences and the worldwide market,” said EuropaCorp President Lisa Ellzey (via Variety). “This film is right on brand for EuropaCorp, and we look forward to working with the filmmakers on this project.”
