Doctor Strange holds on to top spot at the box office as it nears $500 million worldwide

November 13, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Well, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has officially continued its run of box office successes, with Doctor Strange retaining top spot in North America in its second weekend, as well as pushing its global haul to $493 million.

Domestically, Doctor Strange added another $43 million across the Friday to Sunday period, a drop of just 49%, for a total of $153 million in 10 days. Internationally, the superhero origin story has amassed $335 million, including $83 million from China.

Doctor Strange has already surpassed the worldwide hauls of The Incredible Hulk ($268 million), Captain America: The First Avenger ($371 million) and Thor ($449 million) and is fast closing in on Ant-Man’s $519 million gross.

The film will face some stiff competition this coming weekend, with the release of Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.

Doctor Strange sees Scott Derrickson (Sinister) directing a cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) as Stephen Strange, Tilda Swinton (Snowpiercer) as The Ancient One, Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) as Baron Mordo, Benedict Wong (The Martian) as Wong, Rachel McAdams (True Detective) as Christine Palmer, Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal) as Kaecilius and Benjamin Bratt (The Infiltrator) as Jonathan Pangborn and Scott Adkins (Ninja: Shadow of a Tear) as Lucian.
