Kathleen Kennedy on the future of Star Wars and whether we’ll get another trilogy after Episode IX

It’s certainly an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan. Following the release of last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Disney’s sequel trilogy is in full swing with Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII hitting in 2017, and Colin Trevorrow’s Star Wars: Episode IX following in 2019. Meanwhile, we’ve got Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opening next month, a Han Solo spinoff for 2018 and another as-yet-unrevealed Anthology movie in 2020.

Of course, it’s unfathomable to think that Disney and Lucasfilm will call time on the franchise once this first slate of Star Wars movies are with us, and speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Kathleen Kennedy has been chatting about the future of the Saga beyond Star Wars: Episode IX – and whether we’ll get a fourth trilogy, or switch purely to standalone movies.

“That’s a conversation going on right now, too,” states Kennedy. “I have to honestly tell you, could we [do nothing but standalones]? Sure. But I don’t know. We are looking at all of that. There are [possible movies] that we have been talking a lot about. But we are planning to sit down in January, since we will have had The Force Awakens released, now Rogue One, and we’ve finished shooting Episode VIII. We have enough information where we can step back a little bit and say, What are we doing? What do we feel is exciting? And what are some of the things we want to explore?”
