Rumored X-Men: The New Mutants actress says James McAvoy’s Charles Xavier will appear

January 6, 2017 by James Garcia

We know that 20th Century Fox is working on a big screen adaptation of The New Mutants from director Josh Boone (The Fault in our Stars), but not much concrete information has been announced. Boone himself says he envisions a trilogy of films, and rumors indicate that Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), and Nat Wolff (The Fault in our Stars) will star.

We’ve also heard rumors that James McAvoy will return as Professor Charles Xavier, and now we have some more info to back that up, thanks to ComingSoon. The website interviewed Taylor-Joy while she doing the press rounds for her new film, Split, and of course asked about The New Mutants. When asked if she’d seen some pre-vis animation footage of rumored villain Demon Bear, she said:

“I have [seen the Demon Bear animatic], it’s pretty cool. I’m a big fan so I’d love to be a part of it. I can’t say very much, but I would love to be a part of it. I think this year’s gonna be very exciting.”

She was then asked if she hoped the film would reunite her with her Split co-star McAvoy, to which she replied, “I mean, I think James is already a part of it, isn’t he?”

Now, that’s not much to go on, considering the rumor comes from an actress who isn’t yet confirmed to appear herself, but it does lend further credence to the already-rampant rumors that McAvoy’s version of the famous telepath will return to the big screen. Fox remains to play this one close to the vest, but according to ComingSoon, the film is eying a Spring 2018 release date and is being described as “a Stephen King meets John Hughes horror movie,” similar to last summer’s Netflix hit Stranger Things.
