Has there ever been a more mythical game than Half-Life 3? We have looked for signs of the games arrival in every nook, and cranny (even in our fast-food items) over the last decade, or so with no luck. Half Life 3 is truly the unicorn of the gaming world. We hope every year that Gabe Newell will give us a shred of information… something, anything regarding Half Life 2: Episode 3, or Half Life 3. At this point, we are all prepared for the worst.
Well, that may be for the best, because according to a report published over at gameinformer.com, it is likely we may never see the game at all. In the report, an anonymous source, allegedly from Valve, is interviewed. Just a heads up: the author does state in the article that this information could not be verified, but if true, there is a wealth of information being offered up here.
I want to believe.The entire report is well worth a read, especially to get some insight into the inner workings of Valve, but here are a few of the more intriguing bits below:
When asked about the chances we will see Half-Life 3: “There is no such thing as Half-Life 3. Valve has never announced a Half-Life 3… Anything else that we might think about as a full game or sequel has never been promised.”
Half-Life 2: Episode 3 concept art.When asked about how close the game has come to being released: “I’ve heard that some teams have had two to three people working on it, and they eventually ran into a wall, and some teams may have gotten up to 30 or 40 people before it was scrapped.”
When asked about the potential directions some of the teams were taking the game: “They were thinking about using the Half-Life characters as a brand for entirely different purposes. Some were bizarre, like turning Half-Life into an RTS, or a live-action, choice-driven game. These things have been contemplated by people, but were never being considered by the whole of Valve as ‘Yeah, that was the plan.’”
Most interesting of all is what this anonymous source had to say about Valve’s infamous silence regarding the game: “Every time they talk about it, the hunger comes back. That’s why they ignore it. The pain subsides with time.”
… again, this was just the tip of the iceberg, so check out the report in full right here. It’s a great read, and probably the most information we have had regarding the game in a very long time, if ever. However, as the report itself states: take all of this with a grain of salt.
