Warner Bros. may have scored a couple of strong box office successes last year with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, but the reception for the two DC Extended Universe releases was certainly mixed, with many fans feeling the movies were too dark and gloomy.
Since their release, we’ve heard on numerous occasions that we can expect a tonal shift in the DCEU going forward, and that the movies will be “lighter” and “more fun”. Just this week, Dwayne Johnson – who is set to play Black Adam in Shazam – promised “hope, optimism and fun” from future movies, and now screenwriter Will Beall has echoed that sentiment when talking about November’s Justice League movie.
“I think Justice League again is, what you’re going to see — I hope I’m not going to get in trouble for saying this — but it’s much more fun, much poppier,” said Beall, who contributed to an early, unused draft of the script for the DC team-up. “I haven’t seen Wonder Woman yet, but Batman v Superman was a little more somber. But Justice League is a lot more fun. And I think that feels to me like the direction those movies are heading now.

After his work on Justice League, Beall was enlisted to pen the script for the solo debut of Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry, and he also described the Aquaman movie as “really fun”:
“It’s going to be fun, it’s going to be really fun. What we’ve come up with and James Wan especially — he has a really clear idea of the tone he’s going to have, and I think Aquaman is one that’s going to blow people’s minds, not just visually, but I think the story and the scope of it is really great. What’s interesting is that you couldn’t have done it before. You know, you could do Batman in 1988, but now you have the technology, and it’s going to be cool.”
Justice League is set for release on November 17th and sees Jason Momoa’s Aquaman joining forces with Ben Affleck’s Batman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller’s The Flash, Ray Fisher’s Cyborg and Henry Cavill’s Superman. Meanwhile, the Aquaman solo movie is slated to arrive on October 5th 2018.
