Emma Stone, Jonah Hill and Cary Fukunaga board Netflix’s Maniac

February 2, 2017 by Ricky Church

Netflix and Paramount have just acquired some high-profile talent for its upcoming series Maniac. According to Deadline, Emma Stone and Jonah Hill will star in the series with True Detective‘s Cary Fukunaga set to direct all 10 episodes of the dark comedy. Production will begin this summer.

This will be the first time Hill and Stone have starred together since their breakout roles in 2007’s coming-of-age comedy Superbad. Since then, they’ve both been sought after for many roles and have gained much critical acclaim with Hill being nominated for an Oscar for The Wolf of Wall Street and Stone recently winning a Golden Globe for her role in La La Land.

Deadline says Paramount chairman Brad Grey even stepped in and met with Hill and Stone while they were in LA for the SAG Awards to discuss the series and sync up their schedules to make it work. Fukunaga, meanwhile, will direct all the episodes of the series, much as he did for True Detective‘s first season. They also add Stone and Hill will executive produce alongside Fukunaga.

Maniac is based on the 2012 Norwegian series and written by Patrick Somersville. It explores the fantasy worlds of Stone and Hill’s characters as they live out their lives in a mental institution. There is no air date yet for the series, but it presumably will come to Netflix in 2018.
