It’s official: Nintendo announces cancellation of Project: Giant Robot

February 2, 2017 by Jordan Jones

Originally published February 2, 2017. Updated November 21, 2019.

You may remember, a few years back at E3 2014, that Shigeru Miyamoto was hyping a game codenamed Project: Giant Robot. The game was to take full advantage of the Wii U controller, allowing players to build, and customize giant robots in order to pit them against various robotic monstrosities. The game was never officially “scrapped”, but it was curiously absent from Nintendo’s recent earnings report. Well, amidst news of the Wii U halting production globally, it looks like Project: Giant Robot has met with a similar fate.

Polygon.com has received confirmation from Nintendo that they have decided to cancel the title “after considering our overall product and development strategy.”

Translation: we are moving onto the Nintendo Switch, and cutting our losses. Can’t blame them, really. Early impressions of Project: Giant Robot weren’t optimistic, and we all saw how well the Wii U Controller mechanics worked out for Starfox U. While some may be disappointed, this is probably for the best. There is a lot to look forward to from Nintendo. After all, they have recently announced continued support for the always dependable Nintendo 3DS.
