It’s been rumoured and developed for some time, but the Halloween franchise is finally making its way back to the silver screen with original director John Carpenter serving as executive producer.
The horror maestro announced the project via Facebook.
“David Gordon Green and Danny McBride are joining the project to complete the creative team,” he wrote. “David and Danny will write the script together and David will direct. I will continue in my executive producer role to consult and offer my advice and feedback as needed.” He added: “David and Danny both came to my office recently with Jason Blum and shared their vision for the new movie and…WOW. They get it. I think you’re gonna dig it. They blew me away. I might even do the music. Maybe. It could be kind of cool.”
Halloween will be released on October 19th, 2018.
David Gordon Green is the man behind Eastbound & Down and also directed Pineapple Express, both of which starred Danny McBride. Jason Blum is the producer behind horror films like Insidious, Paranormal Activity, The Purge and Ouija, as well as Academy Award favourites like Whiplash.
The last we heard on the Halloween reboot was Halloween Returns, which was to be written by Saw IV scribes Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton. However Dimension eventually lost the rights to the franchise and the film was scrapped. Prior to that there was a rumour of Halloween: The Next Chapter from producer Malek Akkad, but those stories were shot down.
There is no mention of Malek Akkad – who has been involved in the franchise since 1995′ Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers – in story, but he is still listed as a producer on IMDB.
Carpenter first directed Halloween in 1978, which was a big part of the slasher movement of the 1980s, and the film got seven sequels, ending with Halloween: Resurrection in 2002. The series got a new coat of paint via shock rocker Rob Zombie in 2007, which also got a sequel in 2009.
