Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 may have ever-so-narrowly missed out on top spot at the North American box office, coming in second place with $35.3 million behind Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant on $36 million, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel has chalked up another two box office milestones.
The James Gunn-directed sequel has passed the $300 million mark domestically, with $301.8 million, while it’s also flown past $700 million worldwide with an impressive $732.6 million total to date. Having overtaken Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($714.3 million), it is now the sixth-highest grossing instalment of the MCU behind the first Guardians of the Galaxy on $773.3 million.
Also celebrating a milestone this weekend is The Fate of the Furious, with the eighth instalment in the Fast & Furious franchise topping the $1.2 billion mark. With $1.212 billion in the bank, it is just under $10 million shy of the year’s biggest film so far, Beauty and the Beast, with the live-action Disney remake toppling Iron Man 3 to climb into the all-time top ten with $1.222 million worldwide.
