Wonder Woman and Patty Jenkins break record for biggest opening weekend from a female director

June 4, 2017 by Robert Kojder

Early reports are putting Warner Bros.’ DC blockbuster Wonder Woman earning anywhere from $97 million to $100 million (and possibly even higher than that) at the domestic box office, which means that director Patty Jenkins has broken the record for the biggest opening weekend ever from a female filmmaker.

The previous record of $85.1 million was held by Sam Taylor-Johnson who directed Fifty Shades of Grey in 2015. The news comes as a bit of a surprise considering that original tracking estimates were only around the $65 million – $75 million mark, but that was before the film received some of the best reviews ever for a superhero movie, with strong word-of-mouth also likely contributing to the overall weekend haul.

Patty Jenkins is also responsible for directing Charlize Theron to an Oscar in her critically acclaimed work Monster, so this is just another feather in the cap of one outstanding filmmaking career. Let us know below the comments your thoughts on this record being broken…

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Wonder Woman sees Patty Jenkins (Monster) directing a cast that includes Gal Gadot (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Connie Nielsen (Gladiator), Robin Wright (House of Cards), Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), David Thewlis (The Theory of Everything), Ewen Bremner (Snowpiercer), Said Taghmaoui (American Hustle), Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In), Lisa Loven Kongsli (Force Majeure), Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead) and Ann Wolf.
