Sons of Anarchy spin-off Mayans MC pilot to be recast and reshot

July 6, 2017 by Ricky Church

The pilot for Mayans MC, FX’s spin-off of Sons of Anarchy, will be undergoing some extensive reworking. Variety has reported that the pilot will be entirely reshot and key roles will even be recast as FX continues development on the spin-off.

Additionally, Mayans MC will get a shift in its production lead. Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter was originally set to direct the pilot, but has stepped down as director to focus on writing. Norberto Barba has been brought in to direct the reshoots and will also act as an executive producer for the show.

It is unknown which roles will be recast, but the pilot already had most of its main cast assembled. JD Pardo was set to play the lead Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes with Edward James Olmos, Richard Cabral, John Ortiz, Antonio Jaramillo and Clayton Cardenas starring as well. We should know soon which roles will be recast, but one addition that has been made is the inclusion of Emilio Rivera, reprising his Sons of Anarchy character Marcus Alvarez, leader of the Mayans MC group.

Set in the aftermath of Jax Teller’s death at the end of SOA’s seven-season run in 2014, Mayans MC will focus on the struggles of Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the California/Mexico border. EZ is the gifted son of a proud Latino family, whose American dream was snuffed out by cartel violence. Now, his need for vengeance drives him toward a life he never intended and can never escape.
