Exclusive Interview – Director David Lowery on A Ghost Story

August 10, 2017 by Freda Cooper

Garnering four and five star reviews left, right and centre, David Lowery’s A Ghost Story makes a triumphant arrival in British cinemas this week. Not bad for a film shot in just 19 days before the release of the director’s second feature, Disney’s Pete’s Dragon. And one that was smothered in secrecy.

A meditation on life, love and legacy, the central figure is a traditional bedsheet ghost, re-visiting the home he shared with his wife. Unlike her, he has a deep attachment to the house and has to cope with new occupants, people he resents profoundly.

Lowery talked to Flickering Myth’s Freda Cooper about challenging the audience to pay attention to the screen, the inexplicable on-screen magic of co-stars Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara and the second ghost in the film. And he speculates about what could be written on that little piece of paper…

A Ghost Story is released in UK cinemas on Friday, 11 August. Read our five star review here.
