Comic Book Review – Superman #23.1: Bizarro

September 5, 2013 by admin

Robb Ghag reviews Superman #23.1: Bizarro…

“Lex Luthor’s sinister plan to manipulate Superman’s genetic material to create a mindless soldier under his control results in the monster known as Bizarro: opposite of Superman in every way, with no compassion, no remorse and no mercy!“

As we begin Villain’s Month from DC, we start with one of Superman’s arch nemeses: Bizarro.

The 3D covers that DC has created for all of the issues this week are sensational.  Aaron Kuder with Daniel Brown do an amazing job capturing Bizarro’s freeze ray vision, and demented features.  The story revolves heavily around Lex Luthor’s creation process, and how the very idea of Bizarro came to be.

For those unfamiliar with how Bizarro was created, this one-off issue delves back into the mythos, keeping very true to one of the original stories I read of Bizarro from the classic “The Mirror, Crack’d” written and pencilled by the legendary John Byrne.

Believe it or not, you don’t see much of the Bizarro we know, but rather more of his predecessor, as well as his creator.  Ultimately the character of Bizarro is based on Dr. Frankenstein and his monster.  This re-telling is very well written, and all credit to Sholly Fisch, and Jeff Johnson who take a great twist on this classic character.

Without spoiling the ending there’s a fantastic reveal on the final splash page.  It is well worth grabbing this book if you want to learn more about one of Superman’s greatest enemies.
