Rian Johnson on Kylo Ren and Captain Phasma’s roles in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

August 13, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Over the past week Entertainment Weekly has revealed a host of Star Wars: The Last Jedi info. We’ve had a batch of new images, and details on the likes of Luke Skywalker being a grumpy old hermit, Rey and the importance of her parentage, Finn, Carrie Fisher’s final role as General Leia, Supreme Leader Snoke and his Praetorian Guards, and the inevitable comparisons between The Last Jedi and The Empire Strikes Back.

Well, in its latest piece, EW has now focussed on two of the film’s main antagonists, with Rian Johnson offering up some new details on Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Captain Phasma’s (Gwendoline Christie) roles in the new movie.

“He’s definitely been knocked off base,” said Johnson with regards to Kylo Ren. “The defeat that he had at the end of The Force Awakens, but even bigger than that, his huge defining act which, spoiler alert, is the murder of his father… that’s the more interesting thing to dive into. How has he dealt with that in his head? Where is he at in terms of that act and what does that mean for him?”

As for Captain Phasma, Johnson confirmed that she will have a larger role in this instalment, stating that: “Gwendoline Christie is one of my favorite people, and you get to see her in action which I think is going to be really fun. That character is just so damn cool looking. Like, okay, let’s see what we can do with her. Let’s put her in action and see what happens.”
