Doctor Who’s Matt Smith interested in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe

September 4, 2017 by Justin Cook

While his days as the Eleventh Doctor on Doctor Who are long over, Matt Smith hasn’t taken his eyes off of joining yet another major franchise beloved by millions. The actor confirmed during a panel at Fan Expo Canada that he would be interested in taking on a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“I’d love to. They’ve got ask me though, the swines,” Smith said jokingly, putting the ball in Marvel’s court. “But it would have to be the right project.”

Smith wouldn’t be the first Doctor Who alum to journey into the Marvel Cinematic Universe – not by a long shot. In fact, Smith’s two predecessors as the sonic screwdriver-wielding Time Lord, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, portrayed the main antagonists in Thor: The Dark World and Jessica Jones, respectively.

Additionally, Karen Gillan, who played Smith’s sidekick Amy Pond during her several years on Doctor Who, portrays Nebula in the Guardians of the Galaxy (and soon-to-be Avengers: Infinity War) films; Smith referenced the actress when talking about the type of role he’d like to tackle.

“It would have to be something that felt different enough to Doctor Who. I love so many of those movies and I love Nebula, because Karen’s blue. With no hair. Anyway, I’d love to… If you’re listening, Marvel.”

Other actors who have appeared in both the MCU and Doctor Who include Jenna Coleman (Captain America: The First Avenger), Josh Dallas (Thor), Christopher Fairbank (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Toby Jones (Captain America: The First Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier).

The actor’s name has actually been mentioned in relation to a potential role in Sony’s Marvel Universe kick-off film, Venom, which will reportedly not take place in the MCU.

Matt Smith dabbled in major studio blockbusters a little bit with 2015’s Terminator Genisys, but his role in the film is small and fairly forgettable; presumably, he won’t be back for future Terminator installments (if there are any).

Smith plays Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on Netflix’s The Crown and will be back for the second season, which is set for release in December.
