Nightwing director Chris McKay on what makes DC films unique

September 18, 2017 by Jordan Jones

Nightwing director Chris McKay feels that there is a key difference that helps DC films stand out from the shadow of Marvel Studios. Chatting with Metro.Us, the director shared his thoughts…

“Warner Bros is a more director-driven studio. Period. The end. More than any other studio you’re ever going to work at. Just look at the roster of world class filmmakers that have worked at Warner Bros and made it their home. Warner Bros is a director-driven studio, and that’s exactly how they are operating these movies… That’s the kind of filmmaking you are going to see, and have seen with Patty Jenkins on Wonder Woman. That’s what they have done and what they will continue to do, and that’s why these movies are not trying to follow the Marvel model, they’re trying to do their own thing with filmmakers that they like, and produce things that are wholly original and wholly unique.”

With the upcoming Joker: Origin Film, Joker and Harley, Gotham City Sirens, and especially Chris McKay’s upcoming Nightwing film — said to feature real stunts rather than an overrealiance on CGI — Warner Bros. is definitely a director’s utopia. However, one things to keep in mind is that Marvel Studios clearly allows their directors to take risks, as is plainly evident with Taika Waititi’s cosmic Thor: Ragnarok. Also, as the DC Extended Universe continues to grow, it may be harder to avoid the pitfalls of an interconnected universe. Perhaps that’s why Warner Bros. is reportedly planning a separate DC film franchise? One that can be more experimental, and standalone?
