Fast & Furious 9 pushed back to 2020 as Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham spinoff set for 2019

October 7, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Universal Pictures has shuffled its plans for future instalments in the Fast & Furious franchise, announcing that Fast & Furious 9 will now open a year later than previously announced and has been pushed back from its original April 19th 2019 date to April 10th 2020.

Fear not though Fast & Furious fans, as there will be a new entry in the series in 2019, with Universal officially announcing the long-rumoured Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) spinoff will open on July 26th 2019, with franchise veteran Chris Morgan penning the script. Tyrese Gibson isn’t too happy about it.

If reports are to be believed, Universal is looking to entice Justin Lin, director of the third through to sixth instalments, back to helm Fast & Furious 9, while Shane Black (Iron Man 3, The Nice Guys) is reportedly wanted for the spinoff.

As yet, there’s no word as to whether Fast & Furious 10 will be impacted by this shuffle, with the (allegedly) final chapter currently slated to hit cinemas in 2021.
