Taika Waititi has said that he would want to craft an adaptation of the Akira manga, rather than the anime.
There has been a lot of talk over the years about a live action adaptation of the much beloved Japanese property Akira. Numerous directors have been suggested for the task but the latest to be approached by Warner Bros to bring the project to life is the man behind Thor: Ragnarok, Taika Waititi.
Giving his thoughts to IGN on just how he would like to go about tackling the adaptation, he said he would rather adapt the books than the anime movie, which had to constrain the original story to fit into a feature length runtime.
“I actually love the books. Love the movie, but I would not do a remake of the movie. I would do an adaptation of the books. And, yeah, so anyway there’s been some chats [about directing it].”
Whether that’s the right move or not will remain to be seen, but Akira fans will surely be happy to hear what the director is thinking and that there’s a chance of this acclaimed property arriving in live action to the big screen.
