UPDATE: LEGO Dimensions has officially been cancelled

October 24, 2017 by Gary Collinson

UPDATE: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has now officially confirmed that LEGO Dimensions has been cancelled, with the publisher sharing the following announcment:

Original story follows…

Some rather sad news for LEGO Dimensions fans today, as Eurogamer is reporting that Warner Bros. has made the decision to cancel the game a year earlier than originally expected, owing to lower than expected sales, particularly for the year two line.

According to the site, the LEGO Dimensions packs were very costly to produce, particularly those which included unique LEGO elements, and we often sold with little room for profit. Therefore, when retailers were forced to discount over-represented packs such as The LEGO Movie, Ninjago and DC Comics, this effectively removed the profit margin.

Furthermore, the increased output for the Year Two waves put an incredible strain on TT Games, and earlier this year the decision was made to sideline further development in favour of a return to the traditional LEGO video game projects such as The LEGO Ninjago Movie Video Game and LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2.

Apparently there is no plan to formally announce the end of LEGO Dimensions, although TT Games studio manage Dave Dootson has sent an internal company email acknowledging that the project has come to an end:

“Thanks so much to everyone for making Dimensions possible. As difficult as it has been, it is worth celebrating the incredible achievement it represents in the quality of the game, the amazing blend of IPs and the challenging technical demands it presented. It stands as a real testament to the talent within TT.”

The news follows last year’s announcement of Disney cancelling fellow toys-to-life series Disney Infinity, while the Skylanders series is also currently on hold with its future uncertain.
