As he prepares to make his first DC Extended Universe appearance in next week’s Justice League, where he’s set to portray Commissioner James Gordon, actor J.K. Simmons has revealed to ET that he remains open to reprising the role of Spider-Man’s nemesis and Daily Bugle editor-in-chief J. Jonah Jameson, should the opportunity ever arise.
“I never say never, ” said Simmons. “Obviously I had an amazing time with Sam Raimi on those movies, and Tobey Maguire and everybody. That was a great great time, and huge for my career and my life, and just pure fun. If there were an opportunity to revisit that…. I don’t know, though… how old is Spider-Man going to be if J. Jonah Jameson is this old?”
Spider-Man is of course now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it would make very little sense if Simmons was to return as Jameson. However, given that the Oscar winner absolutely nailed the role, it’s going to be very difficult indeed for Marvel to find anyone who can even come close to capturing the character as well as Simmons did in the original Spider-Man trilogy.
