December 4, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. made its return to ABC this past Friday, with The Avengers spinoff hitting a season premiere ratings low with the two-hour season five launch scoring a 0.7 rating in its key demo and 2.6 million viewers overall [read our review of the premiere here].

The first season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered to a whopping 12.12 million viewers back in 2013, with season two premiering to 5.98 million views, season three 4.90 million and season four 3.44 million. Meanwhile, the critically-derided Inhumans premiered in the same timeslot back in September, and scored a 0.9 rating and 3.9 million viewers.

If rumours are to be believed, ABC has wanted to cancel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. after its fourth season, but Disney blocked the move. However, if ratings continue to slide over the next few months, then the show is sure to face a very uncertain future.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs on ABC on Friday nights.
