Rian Johnson on Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Broom Kid

December 21, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Warning. Spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi follow…

Director Rian Johnson certainly shook up the Star Wars formula with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, not least with the final scene, which shifted the action from our main heroes to focus on a young group of street kids/slaves on the world of Canto Bight.

Having helped Finn and Rose escape earlier in the movie, the young kids are now recounting Luke Skywalker’s heroics against the First Order, before being interrupted by their master and told to get back to their chores. It’s at this point that ‘Broom Kid’ – a.k.a. Termiri Blagg – reaches for his broom, using the force to pull it towards him as he looks up at the night sky, staring out into the galaxy and raising his broom as a Jedi would a lightsaber.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Rian Johnson has explained the significance of the scene, stating that: “It’s mostly about Luke. To me, it shows that the act Luke Skywalker did, of deciding to take on this mantle of ‘the legend,’ after he had decided the galaxy was better off without him, had farther reaching consequences than saving 20 people in a cave. Now the Legend of Luke Skywalker is spreading. Hope is reignited in the galaxy. I couldn’t think of a more evocative image of hope than a kid who is playing with his Luke Skywalker action figure and being inspired by that to grow up and have an adventure and fight the good fight.”

So, will we see Broom Kid back again, with a real lightsaber this time? It’s certainly possible, if not in Episode IX, then perhaps in Rian Johnson’s new trilogy?

In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi sees returning cast members Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke), Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar), Mike Quinn (Nien Nunb) and Warwick Davis joined by new additions Jimmy Vee (Pan) as R2-D2, Kelly Marie Tran (Ladies Like Us) as Rose, Benicio Del Toro (Guardians of the Galaxy) as DJ and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park) as Vice Admiral Holdo.
