The 2017 box office has hit a three-year low

December 27, 2017 by Samuel Brace

2017 is set to hit a three-year low at the North American box office.

The North American box office numbers are set to fall by 2.5% in 2017, following last year’s record setting haul of 11.38 billion.

This is despite the late box office blast of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which is pulling in big numbers as the year draws to a close. So far Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi has brought in around $400 million domestically.

The 2017 box office takings as of Christmas day sit at $10.68 billion, which is 2.7% behind the same point in 2016. According to box office tracker comScore (via Variety), the final six days of 2017 are expected to pull in something between last year’s $408 million and 2015’s $431 million.

This would put 2017’s final box office figures at between $11.09 billion and $11.11 billion, roughly $270 million behind last year’s final figure.

This haul would also put 2017 behind 2015’s $11.13 billion, which is the second highest year on record. Despite the slight drop, this will only be the third time the industry has managed to make it to the $11 billion mark.
