Nintendo President hopes to announce Super Mario Bros. movie very soon

January 9, 2018 by Matt Rodgers

In a recent interview with Japanese newspaper Kyoto Shimbum, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima hinted that he hopes to reach an agreement with a studio very soon and make an announcement about the rumoured Super Mario Bros. movie.

Rumours surfaced towards the tail end of last year that Nintendo were in talks with Illumination Entertainment, the team behind the blockbusting Despicable Me franchise, to yank the plumbers from their pipes and put them back onto the big screen for the first time since the infamous 1993 flop, Super Mario Bros.

The failure of the Bob Hoskins/John Leguizamo turkey caused Nintendo to become very protective over the use of their intellectual properties, but according to the interview an animated film could be with us to coincide with the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

The videogame giants back catalogue should be rife for cinematic translation, so if they can get arguably the most famous pixelated character right with Mario, then who’s to say we won’t get an epic Zelda movie, or a brutal adaptation of Duck Hunt? What do you think? Are you excited about the prospect of a Junkie XL reboot of the Super Mario Bros. theme or are you resigned to the fact that videogame adaptations just don’t work? Let us know what you think in the comments section below…
