Stranger Things producer says the show won’t become a franchise

February 28, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Stranger Things won’t turn into a franchise according to one of the show’s producers.

Stranger Things has quickly become one of the most loved shows around, capturing hearts and minds upon its season one debut on Netflix back in 2016.

Season two built further upon that success but the show’s producers aren’t getting ahead of themselves, with Shawn Levy telling ComicBook.com that he and the Duffer Brothers aren’t interested in turning the 80s sci-fi hit into a franchise:

“The notion of a franchise didn’t exist at Netflix before Stranger Things. And we’ve certainly seen our growth as we move into merchandising, as we move into partnerships, and promotional partnerships. We don’t speak of it as [a] franchise. We definitely want to do several more seasons. Beyond that, certainly this has become one of the flagship brands of Netflix. And they would like to see us telling these stories in whatever ways, and for as many years as possible.”

Spin offs, prequels, and continuations of all kinds are very popular these days, especially for shows as popular as Stranger Things, so it will be interesting to see if the series does resist the urge as times goes on.

It’s 1984 and the citizens of Hawkins, Indiana are still reeling from the horrors of the demogorgon and the secrets of Hawkins Lab. Will Byers has been rescued from the Upside Down but a bigger, sinister entity still threatens those who survived.

The first two seasons of Stranger Things are available now on Netflix and feature a cast that includes Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Charlie Heaton, Natalia Dyer, Joe Keery, Shannon Purser, Matthew Modine, Sean Astin, Paul Reiser, Linnea Berthelsen, Sadie Sink, Dacre Montgomery and Brett Gelman.
