Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman said to be way over budget

March 13, 2018 by Gary Collinson

For the past six months or so, Martin Scorsese has been hard at work shooting his latest film The Irishman, which sees him returning to the mob genre and directing a hugely impressive cast which includes the likes of Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel.

We already knew that the Netflix Original movie was shaping up to be Scorsese’s most expensive, requiring extensive visual effects to digitally de-age its cast as the filmmaker explores the life of Frank Sheeran, a labor union official with links to organised crime, who claimed to have been responsible for killing Jimmy Hoffa.

Well, according to Page Six, The Irishman is actually costing Netflix a lot more than it originally envisioned. The streaming service bought the film for $105 million and agreed to finance its $125 million budget. However, that is said to have swelled to $175 million, “and they haven’t done the music yet”.

Scorsese wrapped filming on The Irishman last week, but with substantial CGI work required during post-production, the film is not slated for release until some point in 2019. Also featuring in the cast alongside the aforementioned De Niro, Pacino, Pesci and Keitel are Bobby Cannavale, Jack Huston, Stephen Graham, Ray Romano, Kathrine Narducci, Anna Paquin and Danny A. Abeckaser.
