Justice League finishes its box office run as the lowest-grossing DCEU movie

March 19, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Now that Justice League has arrived on Blu-ray [read our review here], Warner Bros.’ big DC blockbuster has officially finished up global theatrical run, and the financials don’t make for good reading for the studio and DC Films.

In total, Justice League grossed $657.9 million around the world – a sum that leaves it some $10 million shy of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, and the lowest grossing DC Extended Universe movie to date.

Here’s how the DCEU stacks up in terms of box office:

  1. Batman v Superman – $873.6M
  2. Wonder Woman – $821.8M
  3. Suicide Squad – $746.8M
  4. Man of Steel – $668.0M
  5. Justice League –  $657.9M

Regardless of whether you’re a fan of Justice League or not, it’s impossible to argue that this box office performance is anything but a major disappointment, and it’s completely understandable why it has led to a major shake-up within DC Films.

According to rumours, Justice League cost Warner Bros. in excess of $300 million to make – a completely plausible figure given its extensive reshoots. When you combine this with a marketing budget of at least $100 million, and the fact that only around 50% of box office makes its way into Warner Bros.’ coffers, the studio will surely be hoping the film proves to be a solid enough hit on Blu-ray and Digital to help try and claw back some of its losses.

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League reunites Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta and Robin Wright as General Antiope alongside J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) as Commissioner Gordon, Amber Heard (The Danish Girl) as Mera and Ciaran Hinds (Game of Thrones) as Steppenwolf.
